Rising Through the Ranks is an easy, enjoyable read. Mike Wynn's outlook on leadership tools and techniques for law enforcement gives those with a background in law enforcement practical application examples throughout. The various techniques Wynn discusses provide comprehensive examples for each concept. Although the book revolves around law enforcement careers the insightful read can apply to any profession and even day-to-day personal interactions.
As a college student studying Administration of Justice I truly appreciate this writing style approach of teaching through the eyes of a learned experience. Wynn not only provides a framework for Leadership, he describes the importance of followership and touches on several other aspects of leadership including personal development, vision, risk, conflict, change and creative thinking. Wynn describes the key quality to being a leader as one who does the right thing because it's the right thing to do and provides common qualities that a true leader must possess to be an effective leader and respected as such. Qualities of a leader as presented range from being competent, confident, ethical, communicative, and even caring, emphasizing the importance of managing from the heart and showing compassion for your troops.
The most beneficial technique learned through this reading is described as the "good bag/bad bag" technique. Wynn shares a learned technique of taking both good and bad qualities learned through personal experiences, literature, seminars, etc. and dumping them into a "good bag" or a "bad bag." This idea essentially provides a tool for leaders to use to avoid being overwhelmed with thousands of leadership techniques being described as the "ticket" to good leadership. You'll have to read the book for yourself to find out exactly how to utilize the skill.
Above and beyond what I've mentioned, Wynn's book is an excellent tool for current and future leaders in law enforcement as well as students. This would be an excellent gift for a college student studying Administration of Justice or Criminal Justice.
This is an excellent book and a very easy read for anyone in Law Enforcement with the desire to take on a leadership role. The book also brings some very good perspectives on leadership qualities vs management qualities. Highly recommended.
Must read for current and aspiring law enforcement supervisors!
This books gave me an in depth perspective for the expectation of a leader from a manager. I loved this book and I couldn't put it down. Especially the part about failing. I had my sergeant probationary period revoked and getting a second chance to promote coupled with this book makes me feel on fire. Thank you for this amazing book, Mike!
This book described my department where everything is management driven and have very few leaders which has killed morale. We are made to read these leadership books only to be restricted on leading. A do as your told approach rather than how can we increase morale and productivity. It would be nice if my department took heed to the books they have us read.
I'm an avid reader & a police captain, and I throughly enjoyed this masterfully written book by Chief Wynn. It's not written as a textbook to be used in some community college criminal justice class - it's a pragmatic work crafted for those real life cops privileged & entrusted with the to lead within their agency. If you believe in remembering where you came from & taking the hard right over the easy wrong, Chief Wynn is a kindred spirit. Having read a multitude of books on leadership written for business & military leaders, it was a welcome reprieve to find such a well-written book specifically for law enforcement.
I purchased this book while going through the process for a promotion to sergeant in my agency. I passed the written, the essay, then the oral interview, and found myself in the top 10 of 80+ candidates. In my opinion, this book was a contributing factor to my success (not that I wouldn't have passed without it, but this book gave me great insight into the mind of a leader and how to become a successful supervisor). This book also lead me to purchase five (5) additional books on leadership, as they were referred to and described by the author as being very helpful in his ultimate success.
This is a great book with great first-hand accounts, it's an easy and pleasurable read.
